Glucosamine is a natural substance made in the body and is found in our joints and connective tissues. It is used in the body to build and repair cartilage. Chondroitin is part of a large protein molecule that gives cartilage elasticity and allows it to flex easier. Glucosamine Sulphate and Chondroitin Sulphate work synergistically together to improve joint function. |

Both Glucosamine and Chondroitin are found naturally in the human body. As supplements, the products are promoted as cartilage matrix enhancers which are purported to help prevent the breakdown and promote the rebuilding of cartilage.
Chondroitin inhibits the enzymes that degrade cartilage. In a study evaluating the anti-inflammatory activity of chondroitin, it was shown that colagenolytic activity, phosppholipase A2, and N-acetylglucosaminidase were all decreased in aspirated synovial fluid. There were also significant increase in hyaluronate concentration and the intrinsic viscosity of the synovial fluid.
Glucosamine enhance the natural cartilage repair process. Cartilage is 10% cellular and 90% acellular matrix. The acellular matrix, in turn is made of protein fibers and a gel-
like substance known as ground substance and glucosamine is a molecular building block for at least two of the glycosaminoglycans: chondroitin and hyaluronic acid. Thus glucosamine may have an anabolic role in the management of osteoarthritis. In vitro data suggest glucosamine can stimulate cartilage cells to synthesize glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans. |

- People with diabetes and people taking blood thinning (anticoagulants) should consult their doctors before taking glucosamine and chondroitin.
- People who are allergic to shellfish also should consult their doctors before using glucosamine and chondroitin.
- The effects of these supplements on a growing child or developing baby are not yet known. For that reason, glucosamine and chondroitin are not recommended for children, women who are pregnant and women who could become pregnant.
